10 Years of Progress: Road Map to Contaminated Land Management
|
While at first glance the Site Management Journey' 2007 Update may look very similar to the original Journey Map of 1998, there are actually quite a few changes that have appeared on the contaminated land landscape. It is hoped that the changing landscape continues until things like the swamps are no longer present, and the 'Litigation Mountains' are almost eroded away. However, the changes between 1998 and 2007 are very positive...

The webcast was sponsored by the European Soil and Groundwater Remediation Information System (EUGRIS),
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
the Network for Industrially Contaminated Land in Europe (NICOLE),
and ConSoil 2005.
This webcast included two panels with four speakers each.
Panel 1 is titled Shifts in Contaminated Site Management in the EU and US and offers insight to changes in the US and Europe to contaminated site management over the past 25 years,
and insight into future directions.
Panel 2 is titled, From Site Screening to Redevelopment, Progress in Every Step. Panelists will discuss technical advances and policy shifts that allowed them in the field of contaminated site management go hand in hand and feed off each other.

NICOLE Communication on Contaminated Land Booklet
|
'Contaminated land risk assessment and remediation can either be
driven by the need to protect the public and the environment or by
brownfield redevelopment. Whilst brownfield redevelopment brings
tangible benefits that can be seen by all, different stakeholder
groups will perceive different ratios of 'costs' (in their broadest
sense) to benefits. Where remediation is to protect public health
and the environment, it might be assumed that all stakeholders
would welcome remediation. However, experience has shown that
responses can range from outright opposition to any action to
extreme concern.
The communication of risks associated with contaminated land to
those who are not directly involved in the project is unique in the
sense that soil and groundwater contamination tends to be invisible
and may therefore be perceived as a 'hidden danger' caused by others, with exposure being largely involuntary. It is also often disruptive and with no perceived direct benefits to many of those involved.
It is therefore a challenge for companies to communicated contaminated land issues to their stakeholders and to effectively communicate the possible options of the necessary actions or measures to be taken. Experience shows that effective communication can lead to a better quality of solution for all parties concerned and to its wider acceptance.
NICOLE, the Network for Industrially Contaminated Land in Europe,
recognizes the need for practical guidance on risk communication in
the context of sustainable land management. As a follow-up to an earlier NICOLE project on risk communication1 this NICOLE booklet provides further practical guidance and examples. Many industrial and service providing companies were willing to share their best practices and communication experiences. Their case studies are described in this booklet along with the key communication lessons distilled from them. I trust that this booklet will be both enjoyable to read and the key messages valuable when considering the format of your own communications with stakeholders on contaminated land issues'.
